Header Plugs

Overview

PipeServ is committed to delivering top-notch reliability and aftermarket support in air-cooled heat exchanger systems. With decades of experience, we specialise in the design, manufacture of  essential components such as header plugs, ensuring optimal performance and durability.

Header Plugs – Background

Header plugs are essential for closing the access holes in the plug sheets of header boxes in air-cooled heat exchangers. These access holes are necessary for tube sheet maintenance, whether the tubes are roller-expanded into grooves or welded.

Our header plugs are designed with Unified Fine Threads (UNF), ensuring a secure fit and reliable sealing performance, even under the most demanding conditions.

Gaskets –

A Key Component

Overview

The plug gasket is a metal ring shape that fits onto a machined surface between the plug and plug sheet. The plug gaskets are typically 2-3mm thick and made of a compatible material which is much softer than the plug and plug sheet. The table below details compatible materials.

Common Challenges and Solutions

  • Galling: Prevent thread damage by avoiding over-torqueing and using the recommended lubricants.
  • Leaks: PipeServ supplies gaskets with precise tolerances to minimize the risk of leaks caused by improper seating or surface imperfections.

Best Practices – Do’s and Don’ts

Do’s:

  • Always use new gaskets
  • Insert plugs by hand and torque using calibrated tools.
  • Use nickel- or chrome-based anti-seize lubricants.

Don’ts:

  • Never reuse gaskets.
  • Avoid using power tools for installation.
  • Refrain from over-torqueing or using copper-based lubricants.
